OpenAI’s chief, Sam Altman, says humanity has crossed the point of no return on the path toward artificial superintelligence.
“The event horizon is already behind us—the takeoff has started,” Altman states. “We’re very close to building digital superintelligence, and so far it’s much less strange than we might have expected.”
The path toward superintelligence
Altman sets out an ambitious timeline for what’s to come. By next year, he expects the arrival of agents that can carry out complex tasks on their own, transforming software development. After that, these systems will start generating entirely new knowledge — instead of just retrieving or reorganizing information — and by 2027, we may see robots that can perform physical tasks in the real world.
“There’s no way to know how far we can go, but we’re about to find out,” Altman adds.
OpenAI’s mission to build a “global brain”
Altman repeatedly refers to what OpenAI is creating as “a brain for the world”—an artificial nervous system that will become deeply integrated into many aspects of human life, outperforming human abilities across a range of fields.
He predicts a future where “intelligence is as abundant and accessible as electricity.”
For those who doubt these predictions, Altman offers a reminder: just a few years ago, many thought today’s innovations were improbable. “If we had said back in 2020 we’d be where we are today, it would have sounded crazy — just as our current predictions for 2030 do.”
As the race toward superintelligence continues, Altman expresses his hope: “May we scale smoothly, exponentially, and safely.”
While the exact timeline may be up for debate, the OpenAI chief makes it clear — the era of superintelligence is already underway, and humanity must prepare for what it brings.
The Global Brain Argument contends that many of us are, or will be, part of a global brain network that includes both biological and artificial intelligences (AIs).
We are at a historic turning point — a future where superintelligence will profoundly shape the destiny of humanity.
